Strikes paralyse Athens

Tuesday, 07 Oct, 2003 0

Much of Athens came to a standstill because of a wave of strikes by public sector workers demanding better pay.

The Times reports that the famous Acropolis, as well as the Palace of Knossos, on Crete, were closed to the public and tourists because of industrial action by Culture Ministry workers – and that taxi drivers are planning a 48-hour strike across the country, starting tomorrow. The cabbies are said to be planning the strike because of plans to force them to install meters before the Olympic Games next summer.

The Times also reports that police, fire and coastguard departments are also threatening industrial action over pay, while many hospitals and ambulance services have been running with skeleton staff. The BBC News website states that monuments such as the Acropolis will be closed until Thursday.
