‘Suicidal’ passenger causes lockdown at Albuquerque Airport
Police said the hours-long lockdown at Albuquerque Airport was caused by a ‘suicidal’ passenger at the weekend.
The man, who hasn’t been named, has boarded an early morning flight but was escorted off the plane after being disruptive, according to police spokesman Simon Drobik.
When being processed for a later flight he ‘was able to go to a kiosk, grab a mug, break that mug and start using it as a weapon to hurt himself," Drobik said.
Airport officials then put Albuquerque International Sunport on lockdown with incoming flights diverted and others canceled.
It caused travel chaos for hundreds of passengers.
Police negotiators talked with him for several hours before he eventually surrendered.
They tweeted he ‘is not a threat to anyone else.’
He was taken to hospital and was then due to go to a mental health facility for evaluation, police said.
Sunport is New Mexico’s largest airport.
