‘Suicidal’ woman detained after attempting to open door mid-flight
A young woman described as ‘suicidal’ was taken off a plane after landing at New York’s LaGuardia after attempting to open a door mid-flight.
The Republic Airways-operated Delta flight which departed from Raleigh-Durham, was held on the tarmac in New York for some time while fellow passengers gave witness statements to law enforcement.
The woman was clearly in distress according to other passengers.
According to passenger Stacy Herbert’s twitter post, the woman’s father prevented her from opening an exit door.
A young woman in perhaps her early twenties became suicidal and tried to open the door of plane as we descended into LGA. Her father pulled her from door. She was screaming her head off that she needed to open the door and die," Herbert wrote.
Herbert said the woman’s ‘shrieks were terrifying’ and ‘it was awful to see her suicidal distress.’
In another passenger’s tweet, ‘all hell broke loose’ as she went to open the door.
Citing a law enforcement source, CBS News said the 20-year old had been the victim of a crime and was traveling to New York with her father.
The plane landed without incident and no injuries were reported.
The flight was not in any danger as the forward service door cannot be opened in flight.
