Summer travel woes?
Summer delays. Longer airport lines. More stresses on security.
Those were some of the headlines recently that predicted problems for air travelers as the summer heats up. They included:
—Airline delays and cancellations could reach near-record levels at major airports such as Washington, the Department of Transportation inspector general told the US Congress.
—During one day in early May, the security lines at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport snaked a half-mile, and 400 people missed flights, reported USA Today.
—“The good news is that we can get the planes through the skies, but the bad news is that we may not be able to get passengers through security,” US Rep. John Mica, a Republican from Florida and chairman of the House subcommittee, said at a hearing.
Transportation Security Administration officials say they are attempting to alleviate the potential problem by adding screeners. They have also singled out 25 particularly busy airports for special attention.
