Surfer dies in New South Wales shark attack
A surfer has died in what is thought to be the first fatal shark attack of the year in Australia. A man in his 50s was in the water at Tuncurry Beach, in New South Wales when the attack happened.
He sustained critical injuries to his right leg and was pulled out of the water by other beachgoers. Several New South Wales ambulances attended to him with CPR but he could not be revived.
The man was staying in the beach town on a surfing holiday with friends. Judging by the bite wounds, medical examiners say it likely came from a four-and-a-half metre white shark.
