Sydney’s $7 billion events infrastructure boost
Business Events Sydney (BESydney) has announced major infrastructure developments worth more than $7 billion to cater for future conference, convention and incentive travel.
The major upgrades and creation of new infrastructure will centre on harbourside locations – Barangaroo, the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour and Star City Casino.
The centerpiece of the new development will be Barangaroo, which will see the transformation of 22 hectares of former wharves and industrial space on Sydney Harbour into a public, residential and commercial CBD precinct.
The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre will be expanded to create more space for major international events.
“This will give us the largest convention space in the country and allow us to compete for business with Singapore, Shanghai and Seoul,†said Jon Hutchison, CEO of Business Events Sydney
Star City casino is spending $860 million to transform its facilities into an entertainment hub, with restaurants headed by leading chefs, an events centre and a new boutique 170-room five-star hotel.
“This is not just a lick of paint and changing the carpet,†said Sid Vaikunta, managing director of Star City.
The Sydney Entertainment Centre will be demolished, opening up a space for development of a conference and entertainment auditorium for 12,000 people.
Linked to the precinct will be an expansion of the University of Technology (UTS) Sydney business school that will include a Frank Gehry designed building.
Sydney’s Chinatown will be part of the area’s redevelopment with improved streetscapes and laneways.
