Sydneysiders Pope-ing Out of Town to Over WYD

lastminute.com.au says that Sydneysiders are leaving town over WYD 2008, revealing the top eight pilgrimages’ people are booking to escape World Youth Day (WYD) including, Melbourne, hot spots in Queensland and regional getaways – any place but Sydney!

With over 200,000 youths expected to descend upon Sydney for World Youth Day from 15 to 20 July, it’s no wonder deal hunters are resurrecting their desire to skip town for a last minute heavenly getaway to avoid the crowds, road closure and motorcades, says lastminute.com.au. 

“Bookings by Sydney-siders to key destinations around Australia are skyrocketing as we see a surge of people desperate to escape the mayhem that’s expected around World Youth Day”, said  Angie Bohlmann, Head of Brand, lastminute.com.au.

According to lastminute.com.au, the top eight destinations Sydney-siders are escaping to over the World Youth Day period are:

1. Melbourne, VIC up 41%

2. Gold Coast, QLD up 66%

3. Perth, WA up 77%

4. Cairns, QLD up 139%

5. Adelaide, SA up 62%

6. Blue Mountains, NSW up 207%

7. Surfers Paradise, QLD up 85%

8. Hunter Valley, NSW up 92 %

These results show the percentage increase in bookings based on the same period in July 2007*.
