Argentina: South American country has world’s fastest-growing visitor numbers
Argentina has risen to the top of the world’s fastest-growing tourist destinations, largely because of the recent devaluation of its currency, the peso.
According to the World Tourism Organisation, the country saw a 15.4 per cent increase in visitors last year, compared to an average growth around the world of just over three per cent. South America has an overall decline of seven per cent.
Edward Paine, chairman of the London-based Latin American Travel Association, told the Daily Telegraph: “Argentina is definitely flavour of the month.” Some 34,000 travellers from the UK visited the country last year. While more than half of visitors to Argentina come from other Latin American countries (especially Chile), some 300,000 Europeans paid a visit last year.
A renewed interest in Latin American dancing is partly responsible for the growth; Buenos Aires is hosting the world tango championships later this month and some 100,000 visitors are expected.
