Temporary ban on water sports when Boracay reopens

Wednesday, 01 Oct, 2018 0

There will be yet more restrictions imposed on tourists when Boracay finally reopens later this month.

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said there will be a temporary ban on all water sports

This includes not only motorised activities but scuba diving as well.

Environment undersecretary Sherwin Rigor did not say how long the water sports ban would last for.

The surrounding reefs have suffered damage from anchoring boats over many years and need to be rehabilitated, Rigor said.

This could include installing artificial reefs.

When water sport activities are allowed to resume, the island’s six water sports companies will be designated areas where they are permitted to operate to ensure the waters do not get  too crowded.

Tourism secretary Romulo-Puyat also confirmed the expected cap on the number of tourists allowed on to the island each day.

A daily arrivals limit has been tentatively set at 6,405.

Authorities haven’t laid out specific plans about how this will be managed although the Department of Tourism has begun discussions with airlines about restricting the number of flights.

Reports suggest compulsory bracelets for tourists could be implemented.

Bracelets would be given to visitors only after they register to an online database, by giving full details about the length of their intended stay.

Authorities have already imposed bans on drinking and smoking in public open places and said there will be no more beachfront entertainment permitted when the island reopens on October 26.
