Terror alert at Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower was closed for several hours yesterday morning after a man was seen climbing the tower carrying a large rucksack.
Anti-terror police evacuated the area on Sunday and a helicopter and firefighters carried out a search of the Paris landmark, but ‘found nothing’.
The tower reopened at 12.45pm GMT after being closed for the morning, said the press department.
The Eiffel Tower, which welcomes nearly 7 million visitors each year, has been the target of plots by Islamist extremists in the past.
Following a series of terror attacks this year, including the massacre at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, France has been on the highest state of alert.
Police said the man with the rucksack might have been an extreme parachutist hoping to jump from the tower.
