Terror alert for tourists to Spain

Thursday, 31 Jul, 2009 0

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has hardened its advice for travellers to Spain after a bomb exploded in the Majorcan resort of Palma Nova killing two police officers yesterday.

A second devise was discovered under a civil guard vehicle nearby, prompting the evacuation of hotels while it was made safe.

An explosion the previous day in northern Spain led to 46 injuries.

FCO travel advice was revised to warn of a "high threat from terrorism" in the country, adding that tourists could be targeted.

Spanish authorities shut Palma airport and the port for several hours in an effort to prevent those responsible from escaping in a measure which caused widespread disruption to holidaymakers.

Thomson had four flights in the air bound for Majorca when the blockade was imposed. It said two were to return to Norwich and Gatwick while the others would be diverted to other Spanish islands.

Around 300 flights to and from Majorca were thought to have been affected by the blockade as well as cruise ship calls.

Early reports suggested Basque separatist group ETA was responsible for the blast in one of the island’s most popular tourist resorts at the start of the peak summer holiday season.

The explosion occured outside a Civil Guard base.
