Tesco opens branch on the River Kwai
New outlet on Burma / Thailand border is extremely popular, says company
Those of you who despair at the increasing signs of globalisation in holiday resorts – Pizza Huts in Palma, Dunkin’ Donuts in Denpasar and McDonalds just about everywhere – will no doubt groan and roll your eyes at news that Tesco has opened a new store close to the site of the legendary Bridge over the River Kwai.
The famous bridge, which joins Thailand and Burma, was build by allied prisoners in the Second World War as part of the 250-mile railway linking the two countries. According to The Sun newspaper, the supermarket giant now has stores across much of Asia, with outlets in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia and Thailand – indeed, Tesco expects half of its turnover to come from overseas stores this year.
A spokesman told the newspaper: “Our store near the bridge over the River Kwai is extremely popular, and the site is hugely significant.” It is not known whether the River Kwai branch accepts the Clubcard.
