Thailand considers scrapping decades old ban on afternoon drinking
Thailand is mulling the scrapping of a decades old booze ban to boost tourism spending.
There has been a ban on afternoon alcohol sales for five decades which could be relaxed.
Thailand’s Restaurant Business Club and the Thai Hotels Association have both urged the government to end the alcohol sales ban between 2 pm to 5 pm
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said he was “pleased to consider proposals from restaurant operators to change the law.”
It forms part of tourism friendly proposals that include tax breaks.
“We have to look at the overall picture on this. Costs are rising, but the government is also promoting tourism, which will help boost restaurant operators’ income.”
Thailand has targeted 36.7 million visitors this year.
It just announced it welcomed 17.5 million foreign tourists in the first half of this year.
The three-hour afternoon alcohol ban has been in force since 1972.
