Thailand mulls end to Bangkok state of emergency
Reports from Bangkok indicate that Thailand will lift a controversial state of emergency in the capital and surrounding areas by the end of this year.
The emergency decree has been blamed by the tourism industry for stifling the growth of overseas visitors, particularly convention and other business event visitors.
The laws were introduced in the capital in early April in response to mass anti-government rallies by the “Red Shirt” movement that left more than 90 people dead in clashes between demonstrators and the army.
The laws have been revoked in many areas but maintained in the capital following a number of minor incidents.
