Thailand introduces QR code for taxis in a bid to increase safety for users
Thailand is rolling out a new QR code system for taxis aimed at improving passenger safety, increasing transparency, and tackling long-standing complaints about driver behavior.
The initiative, led by the Department of Land Transport, will see more than 70,000 taxis equipped with color-coded QR stickers nationwide by June 2026.
The program introduces three types of QR codes, each serving a specific purpose. Purple codes allow passengers to verify a driver’s identity before entering the vehicle, helping ensure the driver is properly registered and authorized. Blue QR codes are designed for passenger convenience and safety, offering fare estimates, real-time ride tracking, and the ability to share trip details with friends or family. Riders can also rate drivers directly through the system after completing a journey.
Meanwhile, red QR codes provide a direct channel for reporting issues such as driver refusals, overcharging, or other misconduct. Complaints submitted through the system are linked to government databases, giving authorities a clearer record of incidents and enabling quicker enforcement actions.
The move comes after years of criticism from both locals and international visitors over inconsistent service standards, particularly in major cities like Bangkok and above all Phuket, where passengers frequently report drivers declining fares or refusing to use meters.
Officials believe the QR-based platform will introduce greater accountability while modernizing the traditional taxi experience. Whether the initiative will meaningfully change driver behavior remains however to be seen!
