Thailand records best ever August for arrivals
Despite the strong Thai baht, tourism to Thailand is still on a roll.
It welcomed a record 3.13 million international tourists in August, the first time it has topped three million for the low season month.
That is up more than 8% and total tourism related income reached 163.48 billion baht in August.
China was once again the top source market, followed by Korea, Japan, Malaysia, the UK, Australia, and the US, said Pongpanu Svetarundra, permanent secretary of the ministry of tourism and sports.
"The August number is considered very high as it’s the low season," he said
Pongpanu said Thailand has so far received 23.54 million foreign tourists up to the end of August.
Tourism revenues are up 7.31% compared to last year.
Pongpanu acknowledged the strong Thai baht is worrying for continued growth from some source markets, but has not had an impact so far.
"The baht is not yet an obstacle to tourism, unless it gets stronger."
The Association of Thai Travel Agents has called for an interest rate cut from the central bank to keep the baht competitive and lower costs for the tourism industry, Reuters reported.
