Thailand touts crypto payment scheme to boost tourism
Thailand is aiming to lure more tourists with a new crypto payment scheme.
The TouristDigiPay program will enable foreign tourists to convert crypto to Thai baht via QR code-based payments at participating stores and service providers.
Foreign travellers can open e-money accounts which would convert into a Tourist Wallet.
This would enable easy conversion and can be linked to conventional foreign debit and credit cards.
Officials say it has spending caps and anti-money laundering safeguards to prevent misuse.
Thailand has recently authorised stablecoins to encourage the use of digital currencies and made the selling of digital assets tax exempt for individuals.
