The best hotels in India
LONDON – Times Online has been seeking suggestions from leading guide book publishers on the best of India’s hotels. There are plenty to choose from, and these were the properties that really excited the guide books authors.
Mr and Mrs Smith chose:
Marari Beach Resort, Alleppey, Kerala (“the ultimate coastal hideaway”), The Old Harbour Hotel, Fort Cochin, Kerala (“simple sophistication”) and Nilaya, Arpora, Goa (“designed in Goan-gothic style red stone”).
Alastair Sawday’s choices were:
Le Duplex, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu (“The oldest and probably the most gorgeous villa in town”), The tented Banjara, Sangla Valley, Himachal Pradesh?(“hidden among apple orchards on the banks of the Baspa river”) and Shahpura Bagh, Bhilwara, Rajasthan (“unhurried, beautiful“).
Hip Hotels went for:
Devi Garh, Delwara, Rajasthan (“a slick, minimalist hotel 45 minutes outside Udaipur”), Fort Tiracol, Quepem, Goa (“the beauty of Portuguese colonial architecture and a perfect stretch of beach to yourself”) and?Surya Samudra, Pulinkudi, Kerala (“about as authentic as it gets without any compromises on comfort and luxury”). ? i-escape voted for:
Vivenda dos Palhacos, Majorda, Goa (“the house-party atmosphere allows you to enjoy lively conversations around huge banqueting tables”), Chhatra Sagar, Pali, Rajasthan (“stay in tents pitched on a dam overlooking a lake teeming with birds”) and Philipkutty’s Farm, Pallivathukal, Kerala (“an unpretentious Keralan homestay and popular with families”).
