Thursday, 24 Jul, 2023 0

With white-sand beaches and vibrant Latin-infused streets, the island of Puerto Rico is an experience to behold.

Renowned for its intoxicating culture, there is so much to discover, including a host of lesser-known, offbeat experiences.

Check out some of Puerto Rico’s quirkiest activities.

Clear-bottomed kayaking in the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world

Puerto Rico is home to three of the world’s five bioluminescent bays: Fajardo Bioluminescent Bay, La Parguera and Mosquito Bay. These rare ecosystems happen occur when dinoflagellates grow in quantities big enough to produce a ‘glow-in-the-dark’ effect. So, when you paddle or splash the water, these organisms light up in a neon blue-green color. For a stunning bioluminescent experience, head to the world’s brightest bay, Mosquito Bay on the island of Vieques. You can enjoy this surreal experience at night in a clear bottomed kayak. The glowing effect is better appreciated during nights with a new or crescent moon. The island is situated a short, six-mile ferry ride from the mainland, Vieques is a lesser-known island and travellers can also enjoy breathtaking views and pristine, black sand beaches. Practically untouched by large tourist inflows, expect encounters with wildlife including almost 3,000 wild horses roaming the island.
