The real meaning of Ritzy
Paris hotel has the world’s most expensive cocktail – at GBP277 a shot
Next time you are in Paris and feeling flush, why not try out the world’s most expensive cocktail – it only costs GBP277 a shot!
Guinness World Records has recognised the Ritz Hotel’s Sidecar cocktail as the most expensive on the planet – largely because it is mainly made from Champagne Cognac that survived two world wars and the siege of Paris in 1870.
According to the online news provider Ananova, the Sidecar was invented by head barman Frank Meier in the 1920s and at the time cost the equivalent of GBP1.09.
The current bar manager Colin Field said: “The Ritz Sidecar contains Ritz Fine Champagne 1865 pre-phylloxera Cognac. This Cognac is guaranteed, and has been inside the hotel for more than 100 years, although German soldiers nearly seized it during their occupation of Paris.”
For anyone wanting to make their very own version of the Sidecar, it is made up of five parts Cognac (it doesn’t need to be 19th century!), three parts Cointreau and two parts lemon juice.
