The Singapore Flyer closes indefinitely while latest technical fault is probed
One of Singapore waterfront’s most iconic attractions, the Singapore Flyer has ground to a halt after yet another ‘technical issue.’
Now the Flyer’s operator says it will be out of action for an indefinite period.
The latest breakdown to hit the observation wheel in Marina Bay happened last Thursday with 61 passengers on board.
According to Veronique Ye, director of marketing and sales, the 165m-tall wheel remains closed engineers seek ‘more clarity’ on the cause of the technical mishap.
"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and the specialist professional engineers to find out the cause of the technical issue," she said.
The Singapore Flyer opened nearly a decade ago and its first few months of operation were plagued by technical issues.
It suffered four breakdowns in its first year and also closed for two days in July 2010 after been struck by lightning.
It has also suffered financial problems and was sold to tourism attraction operator Straco Corp in 2014 a few months after Merlin Entertainments, which operates the London Eye observation wheel pulled out of takeover talks.
