ABTA Convention special report: Thomas Cook has warned retailers that it may refuse to allow them to sell its holidays if they do not demonstrate support for the operator.
The company, which has announced it will follow Thomson and First Choice in cutting commissions, said that agents will be faced with a choice of dynamically packaging their own products or promoting Thomas Cook.
“People do not go into travel agencies and ask for a dynamic package, that simply doesn’t happen. The dynamic packaging trend is being fuelled by agents who are putting packages together to sell to their clients,” said Thomas Cook UK &Ireland chief executive Manny Fontenla-Novoa.
“Agents are going to have to make up their mind whether they want to support us and sell our packages or do their own thing. I can absolutely see a time when we will say to retailers that they can’t sell our best holidays in August if they are not going to support us throughout the year.”
John McEwan, director of 1,800 branch independent consortium Triton, said an increasing number of its members would dynamically package as a result of major operators cutting commission.
