Thomson to launch dynamic technology ‘within 12 months’
Thomson will introduce a full dynamic packaging system to its shop network within 12 months, UK retail and commercial director Derek Jones has revealed.
The system will enable staff to search and build a package using one portal without the need to go into separate websites.
Details have yet to be confirmed but Jones said it was high on the agenda for the operator as it looks to maintain its level of traditional package bookings but also tap into the trend for dynamic packaging.
“We are looking at putting new technology into our shops and hope to have something within 12 months,” he said.
While admitting the operator had been slow to respond to the incremental business opportunities created by the low cost carriers, he stressed it was now beginning to tap into the potential.
“We wanted to get something out there and agents can now book Thomsonfly or low cost carriers and add a hotel room from our accommodation only site,” he said.
Agents charge a £20 booking fee for each transaction.
“We want to encourage our agents to be leisure consultants,” Jones continued. “If for example a couple book a wedding, we want our agents to ask whether the groom is planning a stag weekend.
“Yes, it’s easy to book a low cost flight yourself but people are also happy to let an agent do the work and pay the £20 fee.”
He said its shop network is currently selling around 500 low cost seats per week and another 500 Thomsonfly seats.
