Thousands evacuated as forest fires hit Spanish tourist region
More than two thousand people have been forced to leave their homes in Spain’s tourist region of Valencia as the worst forest fires in 10 years broke out.
Between 20,000 and 45,000 hectares of land has been destroyed in two forest fires which are still not under control.
The fires may have been accidentally started by workers in the hillsides around Valencia, and the other by agricultural burning that could not be controlled.
The flames have been exacerbated by high summer temperatures and the driest winter in 70 years.
The city’s airport is still operating but there are fears that tourism to the region may be affected.
