Thousands of jobs to go at Air Canada
Air Canada has announced that it is to axe 3,600 jobs by the end of the year.
The airline said it will cut its non-unionised staff by 20% and unionised staff by 10%. But at least two of the airline’s unions have said they will fight the proposals.
Air Canada president and chief executive Robert Milton said: “The outbreak of war confirms our pressing need to achieve our target of $650 million in labour cost savings in addition to the job reductions announced today. I regret the impact of this decision on the many loyal employees affected but we need to accelerate our transformation into a leaner, lower cost carrier.”
The Montreal-based carrier is not alone in arguing that tough measures are necessary in order to survive the current difficult trading conditions. Earlier this week Continental Airlines announced it is to axe 1,200 jobs and American Airlines said it is to cut back on international flights to Europe and Latin America.
