Three tourists drown in Thailand
Two tourists have been swept to their deaths in a storm off the Krabi coastline.
Officials at Krabi’s Chao Fa Rescue Centre said an Indian couple drowned after their boat capsized in strong winds after returning from the popular Thai tourist resort area of Railay.
The incident was the second of the day in Thailand involving the death of a tourist at sea after a Belgian man, who was not wearing a life vest, fell overboard during a boat journey between the islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phangan earlier on Sunday.
The Indian couple were also reportedly not wearing life vests at the time and the captain of the traditional longtail boat, Ekkapong Kinglek, 25, was questioned by local police.
Police later said he will be charged in connection with the deaths.
A strong storm battered parts of Krabi, Phang Nga and Phuket all day and boat captains were urged not to go to sea.
The three deaths come as tourist safety remains in the spotlight in the country following the widely publicized double murders of UK travellers David Miller, 24, and Hannah Witheridge, 23, on the island of Koh Tao on September 15.
