Thumbs up for Haiti cruise ship calls

Sunday, 19 Jan, 2010 0

Cruise ships should continue calling in Haiti in the wake of the country’s devastating earthquake, a new poll shows.

The survey of almost 3,500 people who use the CruiseCritic cruise website in the UK and US found that 67% think ships should go Labadee, the Haitian resort used by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ships on Caribbean itineraries.

The result comprises of 35% who agreed that Haiti needs the money that ship visits provide and 32% who agreed that the company is bringing aid to the country.

But 19% said it was in poor taste and 14% did not express an opinion.

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises ships are making calls to Haiti this week with relief supplies as part of regular stops at the Labadee resort (see previous TravelMole story).

The resort on the north coast of Haiti is leased to the cruise company and has recently been extensively refurbished. It provides beaches and watersports for cruise passengers.
