Tiger Airways says that Tasmania will get its first true low fare airline today with Tiger taking to the sky between Melbourne and Launceston this afternoon.

Tony Davis CEO of Tiger Airways said “We are absolutely delighted by the response we have had to Tiger’s entry to the Australian domestic market and Launceston in particular.”

To celebrate the launch of Tiger Airways Launceston service Tiger Airways has 7500 seats between Melbourne and Launceston on sale today from $19.95 inclusive of taxes and charges for travel between 1 February and 25 October 2008.

Tony Davis said “Tiger Airways is committed to making air travel affordable for all Australians. We are committed to consistently offering low low fares to and from Tasmania”.

The inaugural Tiger Airway’s flight to Launceston today and the start of a service to Hobart from 15 January 2008 will be of great benefit to the people of Tasmania. “Not only will Tasmanians have access to value for money airfares but it will create opportunities for job creation in the state especially in the tourism industry.”

Tony Davis also praised the Tasmanian government and the Launceston Airport for the way they engaged with Tiger Airways. “When Tiger announced that it was setting up a domestic airline in Australia the Tasmanian government and its partners wasted no time in getting their state front and centre in Tiger’s planning.”  “By being proactive they ensured that Tasmanians and tourists have access to true low fares” Tony Davis said.

Launceston joins the Gold Coast, Rockhampton, Mackay, Perth and the Sunshine Coast as the first operational routes in Tiger Airways network to commence since Friday.

Over the coming weeks and months Darwin, Adelaide Hobart, Newcastle, Canberra and Alice Springs will join the network from Tiger’s base at Melbourne Airport.
