Times Square: Heartbeat of New York

Friday, 29 Aug, 2008 0

Lit up by a forest of electronic billboards, a sea of theater marquees and scrolling ribbons of news headlines, no place shines brighter than the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. Times Square, the “Crossroads of the World,” is what we think of when we think of New York City. Glitzy, gaudy, a shrine to American capitalism, it’s the very core of the Big Apple.

From retail outlets and theme restaurants to fun museums and Broadway shows, alluring options await tour groups here in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. Perhaps the biggest thrill is just walking and gawking amid the masses of humanity, so you might see throngs of teens waiting outside for a glimpse of
their favorite singer.

Besides being a media and entertainment center, Times Square is home to a diverse array of businesses and claims a quarter of all hotel rooms in Manhattan. (The 15,000 hotel rooms are more than exist in all of Philadelphia.) More than $2 billion is spent annually on restaurants and retail goods in the neighborhood, and
an additional $1.2 billion is spent on Broadway theater and other forms of entertainment. While Times Square represents only. 1% of the city’s land
area, it has 5% of the jobs. The total economic output of Times Square is
more than the GDPs of Bolivia and Panama combined.

LULLABY OF BROADWAY
A trip to New York is not complete without at least one Broadway show. More tourists see a show on the “Great White Way” than visit the Statue of Liberty or Empire State Building. Many of the 40-odd Broadway theaters are historic gems restored to their former brilliance (and most are on a side street, not on
Broadway itself).
