TIPTO survey finds mixed opinions of WTM
Just over a third of agents believe the benefits of World Travel Market do not justify the time out of the office, according to a survey of TIPTO agents.
In a poll of retail agents within a 50-mile radius of ExCel, several said lower staff numbers due to recent cut backs had affected the ability to attend events such as WTM and fam trips.
But over 65% of surveyed agents said they would be visiting WTM next week, with 22% saying that they plan to spend longer at the exhibition than in previous years.
The maximum amount of time allotted by owners and managers is two and a half days, with counter staff just visiting for one day on the Wednesday or Thursday.
Some senior agents said that for younger counter staff WTM is viewed as a bit of a treat where they can pick up lots of goodies, enter competitions and enjoy free hospitality in some instances.
In terms of motivation for visiting ExCel, the following was stated in order of importance:
1. Meet suppliers
2. Gain inspiration and find out about ‘new’ destinations
3. Pick up information and supporting collateral such as maps and brochures
4. Keep up to date with technological developments
