A travel technology company which provides websites to UK regional tourist boards is to power the European Union’s official tourism website.

Austrian-based Tiscover has won the two million euro contract to develop VisitEurope.com for all 32 EU member states following a tender process involving 40 companies.

The site, which is due to go live in 2005-06, will enable tourists to review destinations, attractions and events as well as make bookings from accommodation providers.

VisitEurope.com will be operated by the European Travel Commission, the umbrella organisation for the EU’s national tourist boards.

Tiscover will work with Austrian partner Electronic Commerce Competence Centre to develop the portal into “a powerful worldwide marketing tool” for EU countries.

Tiscover’s sales, marketing and finance executive director Karsten Karcher said: “Winning this tender underlines the status of Tiscover as a major supplier of e-technology for European tourism.”

He described VisitEurope.com as “one of Europe’s biggest travel projects”.

Tiscover runs destination portals for tourist boards around the world, including the East of England Tourist Board amongst other UK domestic tourism organisations.
