Melbourne is the only Australian city to host Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition, which opened 14 May and runs until 17 October
Describing it as a major coup for Melbourne, Sir Rod Eddington, Chairman of Victorian Major Events said: “This is a true blockbuster exhibition which has been an outstanding success across the world, and we are delighted to be partnering with Michael Gudinski, Museum Victoria and Premier Exhibitions USA to bring Titanic exclusively to Melbourne,”
On April 15, 1912, Titanic, the world’s largest ship, sank after colliding with an iceberg, claiming more than 1,500 lives and shaking the world’s confidence in the infallibility of modern technology. The inquiry which followed the disaster recommended fundamental changes in safety at sea regulations, one of which required ships to carry lifeboats capacity for all passengers and crew
The exhibition features more than 280 artefacts retrieved from the Titanic’s debris field, offering visitors a poignant look at this legendary ship and its passengers and crew.
The exhibition begins with the Titanic’s construction in Belfast, describes life on board, its tragic sinking and the amazing efforts to recover artefacts.
