Guest Editorial from Patricia Ash, Greenstop.net
Dear TravelMole Member
In the four years since I began research into responsible
tourism, research figures for how many people would like
information about travelling responsibly (52%) has hardly
changed. Despite the best efforts of many working in this field,
the travelling public still does not have access to sufficient
information about travelling responsibly. Many companies have
developed environmentally responsible policies, many are working
towards them and are recognising the need to develop these
policies, but does the travelling public know?
Why then have these figures not increased?
Firstly, the message does not get out in sufficient strength and
detail to the general public. Journalists, constrained to
write “Destination focused articles”, are unable to do justice
to such an important topic, although many would like to give
such an important issue more cover and some are beginning to do
so.
Secondly, much time is spent in talking but not in doing, and
there are too many different initiatives, all of which is
confusing for the public. Deciding on a simple, cost effective
and impartial way of classifying the different initiatives will
help.
There are many companies worldwide that are practising
responsible tourism. Some, but not enough, are promoting what
they are doing and including information in their brochures and
on their websites. There are many positives to be gained from
practising responsible tourism. Many companies are involved in
local community initiatives, helping local communities develop
a “sustainable” economy. Without this kind of initiative, remote
communities may disappear or be ruthlessly wiped out by major
corporations and governments who are lining their own pockets in
the interests, they claim, of the worldwide economy.
Tour operators and travel companies have a vital role to play in
preserving our holiday destinations for the future. They have
the potential to influence change because they can set the
standard for the holidays they offer. Sitting around a table
discussing responsible tourism will not further the cause of
responsible tourism. Giving travel agents guidelines for
travellers to hand out on booking or at point of departure will
immediately raise greater awareness of the issues. Requiring
client destinations, resorts and hotels to provide information
on their socially responsible and environmental policies will
put pressure on the service providers to consider these issues.
Tour operators, hotel chains and tourism providers: Let’s get
the message across…Over to you!
Best wishes
Patricia Ash

TravelMole’s reviewer Adrian Mann says: “In the main, it’s an
excellent site, with good functionality and excellent
information. [Though] for the flagship site of the UK’s premier
airline, there’s a distinct lack of an overall design, and it
gives the impression that some of the older areas of the site
have been tacked on without regard to the design of the rest of
the site. Read his full review:
