Tobias promoted by TA

Richard Tobias has been appointed director general of the Tourism Alliance, having held the role of deputy chairman since March.

Mr Tobias, who stepped down as BITOA chief executive earlier this year, will answer to Digby Jones, who previously held the role of director general, and has been appointed to the new role of president.

Commenting on his appointment Mr Tobias said: “Britain’s tourism industry is a £76 billion a year business representing 5% of GDP. It needs a strong voice with government and the appointment of an experienced and well-respected team will help ensure that tourism development receives the investment, support and recognition it merits.”

The Tourism Alliance, which calls itself “the travel and hospitality industry umbrella body” says the board changes will come into effect from 1 January 2004. Other changes include the appointment of ABTA’s Ian Reynolds as treasurer, and Bob Cotton of the British Hospitality Association, as chairman of the management board.
