TOI and CELB launch guide for hotel sector
The Tour Operators Initiative (TOI) and the German Technical Cooperation are hosting an event at ITB on 10th March 2003 from 10:30 to 12:00 pm during which the CELEB/TOI will launch the Guide of Good Practice for Hotels.
The theme of the event is looking at Sustainable Tourism and All-Inclusive Resorts. These resorts are often highly criticized as islands of affluence within the country, isolated from the rest of the population. It is said that they do not contribute much to the local economy but instead threaten the local environment and socio-cultural structure of the neighbouring communities.
Speakers include:
Klaus Lengefeld, GTZ coordination Latin America & Caribbean, Opening remarks the Sustainable All-Inclusives initiative and the role of the tour operators;
Dr. Harold Goodwin, University of Greenwich, UK, on recent findings from Africa;
Dr. Theo Eberhard, Munich University of Applied Sciences (to be reconfirmed), on the interaction of resorts with local agriculture;
Michaela Pawliczek & Matthias Müller, intern at UNEP-DTIE and GTZ, on recent findings from Central America;
Giulia Carbone, UNEP, on the Tour Operators Initiative and Jamie Sweeting, Conservation International/CELB, on the “Guide for hotels on environmental and social best practices”.
