Canada: WHO says city is now safe, but still affected by disease

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has lifted its travel ban on Toronto – but is still warning that the city is an “affected area”.

As reported, city authorities were furious last week when the WHO declared Toronto a no-go area; the directive is already thought to have cost the Canadian economy a billion pounds in lost revenue. Medics claimed that the travel ban was unjustified; stating that the disease had been contained and that there was no danger to visitors. However, there have been many cases of travellers cancelling their trips – even if they were only going to transit Toronto airport.

Meanwhile, three new countries have reported cases of SARS and the death toll has now risen to more than 350 – with 5,500 cases around the world. Mongolia, South Korea and New Zealand are the latest countries to report cases, while there is still major concern over China, where nine more people died yesterday and 200 more cases were reported.
