Toronto van attack suspect due to appear in court

A 25-year-old man is due to appear in court later today following the deadly van attack in Toronto yesterday.

Police have named the suspect as 25-year-old Alek Minassian and said his motive is still unknown.

They said although the incident definitely looked deliberate, they would not call it an act of terror, and that he was not known to authorities.

Canada’s minister of public safety and emergency preparedness Ralph Goodale said: "There would appear to be no national security connection."

The rented van was driven through a busy street in Toronto at lunchtime, repeatedly mounting the pavement, killing 10 people and injuring at least 15 others.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the ‘tragic and senseless attack’ had brought him great sadness.

"We should all feel safe walking in our cities and communities," he said.

"We are monitoring this situation closely, and will continue working with our law enforcement partners around the country to ensure the safety and security of all Canadians."
