Tourism boost for Kenya
Kenya tourism officials are hopeful daily flights will be launched from the capital’s international airport direct to the southern coast following an expansion of Diani Airport.
Kenya Airport Authority has confirmed the airport will include a new terminal building and the lengthening of the runway to 2kms, which will allow the airport to accommodate smaller jets, such as the CRJ200.
The new facilities are expected to boost tourism by facilitating extra flights to Diani.
But officials did not give a timeline for the developments.
Tourism chiefs said it was likely a scheduled service to Kenya’s main gateway Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi would be launched, giving international visitors a direct connection to the coast. Currently they must travel by road across the capital to Wilson Airport.
Diani Airport provides access to popular beach resorts on Kenya’s southern coast as well as offering direct flights to the Masaai Mara national parks for animal safaris.
