Tourism skills shortage in NZ

Friday, 13 Jun, 2006 0

A major New Zeland tourism training organisation says a severe shortage of skilled workers in the industry is affecting customer service and preventing businesses from expanding.

The Aviation, Tourism and Travel Training Organisation says the tourism industry is 17,000 workers short, every year, with spokesperson Helen Jansen says the labour shortage is causing a slip in the quality of service being offered and preventing businesses from growing.

She says industries like the hospitality sector are struggling to find staff and that the issue needs urgent attention to preserve New Zealand’s reputation as a quality destination.
