Tourist dies after volcano plunge
DENPASAR – A 25-year-old Swedish tourist plunged to his death into an active volcano on Bali, slipping when he peered over the rim of the crater.
“We suspect he was killed by the sharp rocks” he landed on, said Police Chief Dwi Suseno.
The victim, Daniel Fetersan, had set off with two friends on a pre-dawn hike along the rim of Mount Batur, Suseno said.
The area around the rim was slippery, making rescue efforts difficult.
It took eight hours to retrieve the man’s body. Workers used ropes to rappel down into the crater.
Mount Batur has erupted 26 times since 1840. It last erupted in 2000 and is considered an active volcano.
A district police official said the route the tourists were on is considered safe and accidents there are uncommon.
