Tourists are being advised to give central Bangkok a miss in late October during the royal cremation ceremony of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The ministry of tourism and sports said it will issue an official travel advisory for October 25-29.

Tourism minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangul said visiting tourists are advised to stay outside Bangkok during the cremation period to alleviate traffic congestion.

The cremation will take place at Sanam Luang Ceremonial Ground in Bangkok on October 26 which has been declated a national holiday.

A royal cremation exhibition will then take place from 1-30 November.

Transport will operate as normal on these dates but there may be amended opening times at some tourist attractions.

It will mostly be business as usual in other ares of Bangkok although tourism businesses have urged the government to quickly announce full details as the uncertainty may put off some tourists from travelling.

The advisory for tourists is not mandatory but they are requested to  wear ‘polite clothing’ TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said.
