Australia: Travellers take to spear fishing after being stranded for three weeks

Adventure holidays are becoming more and more popular – but a group of tourists who have been stranded for three weeks in Australia’s Northern Territory must be desperate for some creature comforts.

More than 30 travellers from as far afield as the UK, Canada, Germany and Switzerland have been stuck at the Victoria River Roadhouse, 400km south of Darwin, because of massive floods that have hit the area. Electricity at the roadhouse has been cut off, supplies are being flown in, there are no fresh vegetables or fruit, and the stranded travellers have resorted to spear-fishing in the nearby river.

According to the online news provider www.news.com.au, the guests are now paying just 20 dollars a night – about a quarter of the qoing rate for the roadhouse. One told the website that he was worried about becoming an alcoholic as there was “nothing to do except drink”. Meanwhile, the owner of the roadhouse admitted that his vistors had not had a positive experience: “It doesn’t leave a very good impression at all.”
