Tourists in Hua Hin warned after first shark attack

The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources will send a patrol team to monitor the beaches of Thai resort Hua Hin after a rare shark attack.

A Norwegian national was bitten by a shark while swimming at Sai Noi beach, although authorities were reluctant to confirm it was in fact a shark attack.

Sophon Thongdee of the Department of Coastal Resources said if confirmed it would be the first shark attack in the area.

Photos and videos showed sharks swimming in the area near Sai Noi beach, although they appeared to be non-threatening reef sharks.

Bull sharks are the more likely culprit and have been spotted in the area by fishermen.

Local fisherman Phichet Wongkai said he caught two 40kg bull sharks in his net a year ago.

Bangkok Hua Hin Hospital said Werner Danielsen, 54, was admitted with severe wounds to his left foot which required 19 stitches.

Signage in Thai, Chinese and English is going up at the beach advising swimmers not to stray too far from the shore.
