Tourists injured after Malaysian boat crashes into pier

Saturday, 03 Oct, 2016 0
Two Chinese tourists were injured and several more shaken up after a tour boat slammed into a pier in the East Malaysia state of Sabah.

The boat suddenly veered out of control as it was docking at Semporna harbour.

A Chinese couple were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

The boat was ferrying the tourists from the offshore island of Mabul.

"A local boatman lost control of the boat as he entered the jetty area as darkness was setting in,” Semporna police chief Supt Peter Umbuas said.

The 41-year old boat captain was detained for questioning, which is standard procedure after an accident.

"So far, we believe that the boatman had not committed any offence under our laws as far the accident is concerned," Umbuas said.
