Train based tourism on the up
The Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) says train-based tourism across the state is undergoing a revival due to high petrol prices and cheaper holiday options.
Queensland Rail figures show rail travel has increased by 18 per cent since 2003, with visitor numbers rising from 444,000 to 523,000 last year.
The QTIC’s Daniel Gschwind says most train travellers are tourists in their 50s looking for something out of the ordinary.
“We’re obviously trying to make sure with the product providers domestically that Australian travellers do consider what great opportunities there are in Australia,” he said.
“Queensland Rail travel is obviously one of those great and special opportunities and at least some people are recognising that increasingly and that’s why the numbers are going up.”
