Travel agents among “8 Most Useless Jobs,” website says
I’m not clairvoyant, but of this I am sure: Careercast.com is about to get some angry feedback from travel agents.
If the reaction to the recent Woman’s Day magazine article knocking agents is any indication, the new CareerCast.com list of Most Useless Jobs, posted at http://www.careercast.com/career-news/useless-jobs and picked up by ABC News, is bound to have the phone lines and social media buzzing.
The list includes, in alphabetical order, Atmosphere Coordinator, Compositor, Data-Entry Keyer and/or Word Professor, Medium/Professional Clairvoyant, Shoe Repairer, Sign Spinner, Telephone Operator, and finally, Travel Agent.
"Technology is the most consistent factor in rendering a job useless," the report notes.
Online sites have made travel a "do-it-yourself endeavor: you can book accommodations, transportation, discover restaurants and entertainment, and navigate your route online. Thus, the traditional travel agent is no longer necessary."
But have no fear, CareerCast has the niche for you: "Specialized travel agents still exist to tackle unusual or exotic requests, usually from wealthy clients. They’ve created a niche that has turned a useless job into a profitable one."
In general, the site says, "a challenge for those who hold dwindling or useless jobs is parlaying their experience into other opportunities. If a particular skill set is no longer in demand, the onus is on you to learn new viable skills."
Indeed, CareerCast.com has a suggestion: "Find volunteer work or a second job that adds more workplace stimulus."
And for that, of course, the job search portal is there for you.
