Travel chaos after flash floods hit parts of UK

Sunday, 29 Jun, 2012 0

Rail services in Scotland and northern England are still severely disrupted following yesterday’s storms and flash floods.

Northern England, the Midlands, Scotland and Northern Ireland were worst hit.

While the south of England was enjoying sunshine, hail stones the size of golf balls were reported in the East Midlands.

Trains have been suspended between Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed until further notice due to flooding and landslip which is affecting East Coast train services and CrossCountry trains. There are no replacement buses so journey times could be delayed by up to 120 minutes.

CrossCountry trains is operating a full service to Newcastle.

East Coast trains is running a shuttle service between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Edinburgh but is advising passengers to avoid this area.

There are no East Coast services to/from Glasgow Central or Inverness so customers should use ScotRail or replacement bus services.

On First TransPennine Express, routes to and from Newcastle may be delayed by an hour.

Yesterday hundreds of people were stuck on a Virgin train from London to Glasgow for up to 15 hours after being stranded in the Lake District between two landslides.

Weather conditions are expected to improve today.
