Travel insurers missing “reckless” skiers
Irresponsible skiers who travel without insurance represent a “massive” opportunity for insurers. The claim comes from First Rate Travel Services, quoting Foreign Office statistics showing that two out of five UK holidaymakers travel with no insurance or inadequate cover. With Italian insurance company SAI claiming that injuries on the country’s ski slopes have increase by 1,800 this year over last winter, First Rate claims that UK enthusiasts are not taking the dangers of winter sports seriously. Research by the provider of insurance and other travel services shows that the top three ski injuries – knees, wrists and collar bone breaks – accounted for 63% of all winter sport claims last winter. The company’s head of retail Andrew Brown said: “The issue of inebriated and irresponsible winter sports enthusiasts has more imminent and wider implications than the mere fining of individuals next winter. The danger that such individuals present is a growing phenomena that affects anyone that hits the slopes. “The increasingly expensive premiums which some insurance providers charge for generic policies are encouraging winter sport seekers to risk holidaying without insurance,” he claimed. “Yet with injury figures reading like those from a small war, the question of why winter sports enthusiasts do not better protect themselves does beg to be answered.” The company says that the average winter sport claim it receives is for more than £3,000, about six times the price of the average ski holiday, while a week’s winter sports cover costs £22.
