Trenitalia intensifies its rail offer in France and looks at Paris-London
Italian State rail company Trenitalia opened sales in mid-September for the winter season on its three lines Paris–Lyon, Paris–Marseilles, and Paris–Milan. The new timetable, valid until mid-March, is marking a decisive turning point in the company’s development in France.
Starting from December 14, 2025, the company takes a new strategic step by significantly strengthening its offering on the Paris–Lyon axis, with 5 additional round trips. It will then bring the total number of daily weekday round trips by Frecciarossa high-speed trains to 14.
Paris-Lyon: 14 daily round trips from mid-December
After a first reinforcement last June, Trenitalia currently offers 9 daily round trips between Paris and Lyon. The route is already a pillar of its network in France.
However, starting from December 14, 2025, five new daily round trips will further enrich the offering between Paris and Lyon, bringing the total to 14 daily round trips, or 28 trains during the week. The intensification of services on the Paris-Lyon line illustrates Trenitalia‘s shift toward a strong and sustainable presence on this strategic axis.
These additional frequencies aim to meet the ever-increasing demand from travelers, whether they are professionals or leisure travelers, and confirm Trenitalia’s commitment to providing accessible and sustainable mobility.
Tickets between Paris and Lyon are available from €23*.
Paris-Milan: a facilitated trans-alpine connection
Since April 1st, travelers can once again reach Italy thanks to two daily round trips between Paris and Milan. Trenitalia offers departures in the morning and afternoon. Frecciarossa trains serve Lyon Part-Dieu, Chambéry, Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, Modane, Turin, and now Oulx. The latter is an iconic alpine resort and gateway to the Italian ski areas.
This enhanced alpine service allows vacationers to reach the mountains with ease. And to fully enjoy winter sports or the snowy landscapes of the Franco-Italian Alps. Chambéry, Modane and Oulx are ideal stops for a snow getaway or a stay at a resort.
Tickets between Paris and Milan are available from €35*.
Paris-Marseilles: heading south via Lyon airport
Since June 15th, Trenitalia has been connecting Paris to Marseilles with 4 daily round trips, serving Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport, Avignon TGV, and Aix-en-Provence TGV. If this connection has won over summer travelers, it also stands out as a perfect option in winter, whether for a sunny getaway, a cultural visit, or a business trip.
For business travelers, this connection between Paris and the Aix-Marseilles metropolis, offers an accessible and efficient alternative to SNCF. It also provides an interesting alternative to catch a flight at Lyon international airport.
Tickets between Paris and Marseilles are available from €27*.
Competing with Eurostar on Paris-London from 2029?
To date, Trenitalia remains the most serious competitor to French national railways company SNCF. Trenitalia was indeed the first European operator to have established itself in the French railroad market, back to December 2021. Its high-speed train offer complements the existing offer on the Paris-Milan, Paris-Marseilles and Paris-Lyon lines.
In an interview to French business travel publication “Voyages d’Affaires”, Fabrice Toledano, Director Marketing and Sales for Trenitalia France, indicated that the company has the ambition to double the number of passengers this year, mainly driven by the opening of the Paris-Marseille route in June and the growth of other routes.
The Italian rail company has indeed big plans in France. The Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) group, Trenitalia’s parent company, announced last spring to look at launching a high-speed rail service on the Paris-London axis by 2029. The service will integrate the same Frecciarossa, the high-speed “Red Arrow” trains used by Trenitalia in France. The budget allocated to this project is substantial, estimated at one billion euros.
However, Trenitalia will not embark on this adventure on a stand-alone position. The Italian rail company chose to partner with private company Evolyn. The latter has been working on a similar project since 2023. It intended to order 12 high-speed trains from the manufacturer Alstom.
