TripAdvisor sells off Chinese business Kuxon
The online travel market merry-go-round continues in China after TripAdvisor announced it has sold Beijing-based travel site Kuxun.
Metasearch site Kuxun offers flights, hotels and train travel.
The new owner is Meituan, a daily deal group e-commerce platform, which itself is reportedly an acquisition target for online travel giant Ctrip.
TripAdvisor CEO Stephen Kaufer said its operations in China had suffered a few missteps and it hopes to compete better by focusing on the outbound travel market.
"We’re not winning in the way that we wish to. The strength of us versus the competition for the Chinese traveller we feel plays to our strengths focusing on the outbound. So, you can see a bunch of that on the site today and I can simply hint of more change to come over the course of the year."
At its last earning call, TripAdvisor said its China businesses operate at a loss, much like US based Expedia which sold its majority stake in underperforming Chinese travel company eLong recently.
